Wakui

Wakui is Yasunobu Endo’s driver and a missing figure in the investigation of the Saitama Dog Lover Serial Disappearances. The account gives little personal history, but a witness’s recollection of his occasional rides to a hospital makes him more than a name attached to Endo: he appears as a young man who helped someone get needed heart medicine, then vanished from that person’s life as well as from the investigation’s view.

Identity and Role

When the newspaper assigns its reporters to investigate the missing men, Wakui is identified as Endo’s driver. The reporter covering the Saitama Organized Crime Control Bureau is tasked with finding out about both men, including when they were last seen alive and how they might have been connected to the case. Wakui enters the story through this shared disappearance; the evidence offers no further details about his background or duties.

The Missed Hospital Ride

A witness remembered that on July 22 of the previous year, Endo had promised to drive him to the hospital for heart medicine but did not arrive. Endo, or Wakui, had sometimes given him a lift there. The witness had recorded the date on a calendar and was angry at the broken promise, stressing the importance of keeping one’s word. He said he never saw Endo again after that day. The recollection does not establish that Wakui was the person who was meant to drive that day, but it places his ordinary helpfulness alongside the moment the witness began to lose contact with both men.

Disappearance and Uncertain Fate

The witness later heard from another person in the Takada-gumi that Endo and Gen Sekine had been in conflict. From that report, he inferred that Endo must be dead and thought Wakui probably dead as well. This was a witness’s conclusion, not confirmation of Wakui’s death. The investigation traces Endo’s final night to a brief call to Yumi-chan at 9 P.M., after illegal gambling, but the account does not establish where or how Endo was killed, nor what happened to Wakui. That gap leaves Wakui’s disappearance unresolved even as the search makes him one of the case’s central missing men.
